Why I Interview Runner Friends

No one has really asked me why, but I am glad to know that there are plenty of friends out there who enjoy reading my 'runner profile interviews' as much as I enjoy throwing questions at my interviewees.

How did it all begin?
Years ago when I was still living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I was approached by a friend for a runner profile on me. I was so surprised and taken aback as I was fairly new to the running community. Me, a runner profile??

I wasn't sure what to do or how it was done so I read up on all the runner profiles he had on his blog before I felt confident enough to tackle his questions for me. After that, I bragged to my friends and colleagues about being 'interviewed'! :D

(You can read my runner profile here. It probably needs updating!)

Back then, I was still a newbie and excited about running (nothing more than half marathons) and Dutamas Runners, the running group I was with. As I got to meet more runners from various events, I began to realise how inspiring each individual runner can be.

I started with a few friends within the DR group like Andrew, Raymond, Michelle, Melvin, Paul, Wai Loon, Kenny, etc. During a Blog with Brooks competition, I used the same approach with a few friends like Khoo Yit Kiat and Jamie Pang.

How does reading runner profiles inspire others?
Everyone worships the elites of of any sport. To name a few  from trail running and running alone, there's Kilian Jornet, Emelie Forsberg, Anna Frost, Mo Farah, Usain Bolt. We read about them, their stories and achievements and we are in awe. We get inspired.

Yet we are also in awe of the people surrounding us - some run faster and better than us, some have sheer determination and will power to get out there to do what the enjoy the most, and not bothered about finishing last, some are born natural runners and some still struggle to improve themselves after years of running.

Everyone has a story to share, and the guy or girl next door can inspire and motivate you without you (or them) realising it. I strongly believe that these friends are equally as inspiring as the elites out there, if not more interesting. :)

Dutamas Runners : Kenny Goh

Kenny is Mr. Positive, Mr. Determination, Mr. Serial-Gym-Crawler... and what he sets out to do, he does.

When he's not busy running around working, or running and cycling, you may find him either spending time with his lovely family or just preoccupied with bicycles!

His introduction to Dutamas Runners was a lonely one. His first run was just him and Captain KYK alone while the rest of us were somehow, not available. :D

1. What inspired you to start running?
 Running was my life changing experience. It was at a time in my life that I decided I needed to do something to improve my lifestyle. Life had become monotonous between family and work responsibilities I was always tired physically and mentally. I was putting on weight and a healthy social life was non-existent. When my wife and I was expecting our second child, I decided I needed to make a big change. I wanted to do something healthy and yet challenged me as accomplishing these would be a great boost in morale.

I decided running was the easiest thing to do without any big preparation required. I have never ran in my life. Even while in school, the only sports similar to this was perhaps the school jogathon event. The novelty of running quickly caught on as I got to know new friends in the running circle. After running, this also spurred me on to be active in cycling as well. Life was about to change in a BIG way for me! ;)

2. Besides running, you also cycle regularly and join events. How do you divide your time on the road for both activities?
 As fun as both was, it wasn’t easy. Hehe… the humour in this was that my running friends were constantly asking me to keep to a proper running programme and my cycling friends said I wasn’t doing enough cycling to build my legs. But I went with the idea of cross-training and mixed it up. Well, I try to do at least 4-5 days of workout a week and I use to swing back and forth between cycling and running daily. But nowadays I find it better if I rotate between the two weekly. I don’t think it’s set in stone, so I think I’ll probably still mix it up as I enjoy it. :D

3. What's so good about waking up early to go running or cycling?
 I absolutely vouch for this!!! There is so many good things about working out in the morning. To start, it’s a great way to wake my body up. You really can beat the surge of endorphin that continue to surge through your body the rest of the morning. My head is also clearer and I don’t have to worry about being busy or getting calls regarding work that early in the morning. I love the coolness of the morning and everything does seem a lot fresher. With cycling, it’s also a real touring experience at the start of the day to see people starting the day and shops opening!

4. On a lazy day, how do you motivate yourself?
Sometimes there’s just no motivation to get up and moving… hehe. If I felt I needed a little more rest, I’d just do that! But, that’s where having a circle of running and cycling friends comes in handy. They are really the best people to keep reminding me of what I needed to do. “Did you RUN today, Kenny?”… ;)

[Yvonne: Hmm... I'm sure you're referring to all your running friends. :D]

5. With 2 Full Marathons, some Half Marathons and plenty of other running events under your belt, what is your dream race?
 The running events have been wonderful. Well, actually, to be more specific, crossing the finishing line is really the best bit! Lol… So, I have never really felt that I should be sadistic and run 100km in ultra marathons. Hats off to those who do. But I’d love to run a fast enough full marathon to be able to attend prestigious running events like Boston or the famous NYC Marathon, either one of these would be a dream come true!. Yes, it’s about running and traveling.

6. What does Dutamas Runners' motto 'Dont Think Just Run' mean to you?
 I believe a lot of people who have not done it before do fear that they can’t do it. They probably think too much about the pain, the problems and not being good enough. Well, I’d say to them, “Don’t Think, Just Run”… surprise yourself, let your body, your physical-self tell your mind what you can or cannot do. ;)

7. Do you believe in carbo loading before an event? If yes, what's your favourite food?
 Hahaha… I’d like to believe that my body stores enough glycogen not to require carbo-loading. :P I know that’s not right, so what’s important for me is to eat properly. Well, sometimes I control my diet when I’m on a weight loss period in my training, but when there is an upcoming run, I put this on hold and eat enough to store up for the run. You’ll see me enjoying all sorts of delicious pastries, breads, potatoes, pasta as I treat myself to full Western courses before any events!

8. What's your running goal for 2013?
I try to change it up every year to keep things interesting. 2013 will about running faster, so I’ll be signing up for 10k’s and HMs. I also plan to do my very first triathlon event in this coming year. Daunting but very doable (that’s what my friends say…) ;) But one thing that I will always strive to achieve is to hit my fitness and weight goal. Losing weight will directly affect how fast I run, so that’ll be a key focus of mine to do well in 2013.

Head down to Kenny's blog to keep up with him and his ongoings. :)
Don't forget to say hi to him at the Great Eastern Live Great Run 2012 this Sunday!

Brooks Run Happy Profile: Khoo Yit Kiat

Khoo Yit Kiat (KYK) is known as the 'Kenyalang' or 'Kenyan Kuning' within the KL running community. He is THAT famous!

I didn't know he was that famous until I joined his running group and every runner on the street would greet him along the way. ;)

Previously, Jamie did a mini interview on him (here) and I thought since it's been a while now, we'd better catch KYK for a quick update!

[I am also taking this opportunity to label this as a Dutamas Runners' Interview!]

1. You have been lying low for a while now and the last we saw you was running the half marathon at the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2012. What’s up?

I can’t even remember what races I’ve done. I’ve been so busy at work plus getting married this year (well, we just had our wedding reception!). Anyways, my niggling left foot injury can’t seem to heal as well as I thought.

I'm putting on weight (I guess no one would believe me in this, but I have put on almost 7kg!). That’s explain why I cannot rush back into speed in my training, which I was able to do last time.

(photo credit to Lim Soon Chung)

2. You’ve been running since your high school heydays. Do you think you will ever get tired of running, and maybe venture into something else?

I don’t know. But I’ve seen my running friends still doing well over 50 years of age and I guess I will try to emulate them. Although it’s embarrassing to get beaten by a 50-year-old at times but it’s something we should look into as to why they can still perform well at that age.

Especially when you talk to the younger generation who keep giving excuses, “Oh, I'm too old too run”. I hope I can still run as long as I can.

It will be a privilege to do so, don’t you think?

3. What’s your favourite race distance – 5km, 10km, 21km or the full marathon at 42.195km, and why?

I started my running days racing the 1500m, 3000m and 5000m and I’ve always love the speed endurance race. As I aged, a 10km-21km race seems to be the preference. But once in a while, I still love to test myself in the shorter distances. Speed thrills!

I still have not mastered the marathon race as well as I want. Hopefully I will get to train for another one soon, as it does take a proper program to take you through the distance in a respectful time.

4. What’s your favourite pre-race and post-race food?

I eat as I please. No special pre or post race diet. I used to try out eating “Chu yok chap + fan” which means “mixed pork + rice”. I thought it worked well. Anyways, the only advice I have is don’t try anything out of the ordinary on pre-race day.

5. You’re the Captain of the Dutamas Runners group, which seem to have a passion for food. If you woke up one day to find that the Dutamas Runners have renamed themselves to Dutamas Eaters, what would you do:
a. Tearfully leave the group and never look back;
b. Delete the group and recreate a new one, guns ablazing; or
c. Happily participate in the next nasi lemak and bah kut the gathering.
Haha. I’ll choose d. None of the above!

Hey you are crazy asking your captain this sort of question! You know it’s hard to keep the Dutamas Runners to focus on their running when each conversation seems to lead to food. Well, I am a culprit myself sending photos of food over whatsapp.

Anyway, I hope I can find time to really focus on the group since there are many who are looking to improve on their running, and I hope I can pass on my knowledge and experience to those who need it.

6. You own one or two pairs of Brooks shoes. What models are they and what’s your take on them? Have they served you well?

2? I actually have 3! My first Brooks model was the Racer ST 3. It was one of those shoes that I was looking for, lightweight and a little bit of cushioning. I actually did my marathon personal best (PB) in the 2009 Melbourne Marathon.

Since then I had Brooks Ghost 2 as a training shoe and the latest I bought was Brooks Racer ST 5. I did my 2012 Boston Marathon in that shoe. However, it was one of those race where I was ill-prepared. I did my personal worst timing of 4:30. I can’t blame the shoe, as I was just too busy at work, left foot injury still bothering me and also finding the motivation to train after a long injury lay-off is hard.

But I am looking forward to be back on the road soon!

7. Any wise words for the newbie runners out there?

I don’t think this page will be enough. Anyways, the way I see it is that these days, newbies tend to run the distance too far too soon. You need time to get your legs accustomed to running on hard surface (as you hardly get to run on softer ground in KL, unlike in overseas). Also newbies tend to get influenced by their friends in doing longer distance that they are unprepared for. Preparation is the key in distance running plus consistency in training.

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading his interview as much as I had fun (especially with question 5) coming up with the questions for him. Hehehe!

Run Happy with Brooks!

Dutamas Runners : Michelle Looi

Michelle recently won the Intermark Charity Tower Run held on 7th July 2012, conquering 1200 steps (59 levels) in about 11 minutes.

She is regularly seen as one of the podium finishers for many running events, escalating her into the level of 'elite' runners. Well, for humble runners like myself and many beginners, she IS definitely considered an elite! =))

1. What was the first running event you participated in, signaling the beginning of your 'running' career? ;D
I’m a late starter and I started off with a goal to race in a triathlon which became IRONMAN. Running is part of it. Officially, I started running in the year 2008 and the first event I participated was Great Eastern's 20km.

2. You have achieved so much since then. Do share with us your usual weekly training schedule!
I run at least 5 times a week with a variation of speed work, speed endurance, LSD and trail running. I begin my week with an easy run or swimming on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday I will be at Kg Pandan track for speed work or speed endurance. Friday or Saturday is usually reserved for trail running as I have more time to do it. Sunday is for LSD or a race day for me.

If Sunday is a race day, Monday is usually my rest day.

3. Who is more competitive, you or Tomatoman?
 Depending on the race, I would say both of us are equally competitive. However we don’t race with each other. :D

4. You have a knack for altering or modifying your running vests and t-shirts. Please show us a picture.
 Oh well, first of all I would say this t-shirt has a sentimental value to me. I joined the race and I would like to wear it as I’m really proud of it. Unfortunately most of the time I get an oversize t-shirt, it is dull and boring to wear and can’t bring out the femininity. That’s the first reason why I'd alter it. Another reason is, it is FREE and I’m more daring to cut it.

5. Some say that women shouldn't run too much (for health reasons), but what's your take on this?
 Women tend to have differences in muscular and skeletal structure than men; we are more prone to injury. It is important for women to do some weight training. Easier said than done - I’m still procrastinating on this matter.

Another thing that I would like to highlight is that it is harder for us to run at certain times of our cycle. As for me I notice my heart rate is higher a few days before my menstruation and I tend to breath harder too. Good thing about it is that if you monitor it for few months, you can adjust your training based on your cycle. Example 3 weeks hard and 1 week easy. You can also plan your race base on your cycle. Tips from me, I will usually choose races that require speed during the beginning of my cycle as my heart rate is lower and breathing is easier.

6. Is there a major event this year which you are currently focusing on?
 It will be Penang Half Marathon as I’m aiming to go below 1 hour 49 minutes which is my current half marathon record.

7. If you could change one thing about you, what would it be?
I’m quite happy with what I have now and haven’t thought of what I want to change.

8. When injury prevents you from training too hard, how do you work out?
I will rest or change my training to swimming or cycling. If things are getting better, usually I will start again with 30 minutes easy run.

9. Any dietary tips for us to be as lean and mean as you? ;D
Emm.. Less meat ,more vege and eat less carbo at night. I would love to advice ppl to eat more fruits, unfortunately I don’t like to eat fruits except durian and banana.

~~~
Michelle is also the top female runner for the mixed category of last year's KL Rat Race, completing 4.5km in about 22 minutes!
I was hoping to dig out some secret tips from her (in order to be a faster runner) but alas, it seems like there's no secret to it - all you have to do is train and train and train. Don't stop running!
To know her better, you can follow her blog. ;)
Dutamas Runners : Andrew Choa
Andrew Choa is perhaps one of the few people whom I know who worries a lot. ;D He joined Dutamas Runners about a year ago, perhaps thinking he'd get more training with us but instead, he found people who constantly talked about food all the time. ;)
Andrew's day job can be described as:
"I find it quite heard to explain to people my job title. I used to be in advertising for a few years before switching into the servicing line. “Kuli Olang” in a nutshell. Hehehe...."
1. How long have you been running and participating in events?
Running activities had been vaguely present in my workout routines the last few years; but nothing really serious. To begin with; I’m not much of a runner. However, the running bug really bita back in early 2010 for the Putrajaya Night Marathon. I still remember I signed up for the easiest one; 7.7km with friends. It was from here that I realised how slow I was! By the end of it, I felt incomplete and decided that I need to train and push more.
The rest is pretty much history. Plus, a friend challenged me that one day he will
want to see me in a Full Marathon (the thought still scares me!)
2. Were you an athlete in school during your teenage years?
Hmmmm....not really. Does being a hyper-active rascal counts? Hahahah...
My mom & uncle who are quite regular runners had tried to introduce me to running at a young age. It didn’t really catch on as I was very impatient (who isn’t when they’re teenagers?) and I dread pounding my feet on an endless loop at the park.
Though, I did use to vent out a lot during my active Taekwondo years.
3. You've signed up for your FIRST marathon this year! Are you geared up? How does your training plan look like?
OH YES! In fact there are 2! I gotta be frank; I’m scared sh*tless!
You can say I’m pretty much geared up but I do try not to think about it too much. I
remembered when I over-prepared myself too much for a major run in 2011. Got myself overly excited and was sleep deprived. At the end, I got injured close to the finish line and I felt rubbish.
In terms of training plan; I have an ambiguous one. Although I do keep track of my
training, I don’t necessarily plan a strict one. It’s pretty much of mixture of the regular road/ treadmill running but keeping it short distance. It’s all about quality than quantity, right? ;) I started trail running as well this year just to keep things interesting.
4. When you're not running, how do you destress? (Cook up a storm? ;D)
Hahaha...pretty much so. The cooking bug had me bit since at a young age. Although my cooking now is more towards a healthy cooking; like less meat and less oil. Besides that, I enjoy photography and am quite a bit of an avid window shopper.
5. We've seen you in compression gear before. Are you a firm believer (of the gear), and why?
I just really own a pair of compression calf guards and I only used them for competitive run events. During these events, I tend to push a little harder than usual and just a safety precaution to avoid injury. It really does help a little but my advice is not to rely too much on it and not to use them during regular training.
6. Is your mum your no #1 fan? Has she attended any of your running events before?
I would say so! In fact she was very surprised that I picked up running again (albeit at a later age). But she does express a concern that I might be over doing it and turned a little fanatic; judging from the running shoes I have! Mom jokingly says “I’m worse than a woman!”
She hasn’t attended any running events I’ve been to but she always has a great time
looking through the photos.
7. What's your favourite brand for running gear?
Nothing in particular and I’m not very brand loyal. As long the gears are comfortable and fit to the purpose. I am a little picky about running shoes though. I do indeed do a very scrutinizing research and testing before any shoe purchases.
8. What is the one thing you think our Malaysian running events should have?
Proper organization. That said, I think the running events in Malaysia is getting better and better as the years go by. Sure there are mishaps here and there sometimes, but I do give organizers the benefit of the doubt. Unless of course, there is a major screw-up that is unforgivable. Cross fingers!
9. If you were stuck on a secluded island, what are the 3 things you'd miss the most?
It’s very hard to say. First and foremost, I try my best not to be stranded at all!
If I were; I would say, family & friends.
YT: Eh, the last line is a bit too cheesy la. I think the 3 things for you would probably be: kitchen, food and ... the laptop? ;P
 Anyway, we are definitely cheering you all the way on your maiden (and second) full marathons which are soon to come. Good luck in your preparations! Woohoo! At least you won't be a FMV* anymore, come this end of May. ;)
Dutamas Runners : Yloon Wong
He's one of the guys I know with a 'nama glamour' on Facebook - and he goes by the name of Yloon Wong.
I don't think his parents named him Yloon, right? Hehe.
His occupation? Senior Technical Operation Engineer.
1. How did you start participating in running events? Were you a runner during your school days?
I started running during my school time (1992 to 1994). I used running to improve my stamina. Especially during Taekwondo competitions, it helped me to drain my opponent's energy and to surprise those elite opponents in free sparring event.
I still remember when I was 17, I managed to complete the Larian Merdeka-10km in 50minutes. I don't know why I cannot get this timing anymore. :( Maybe old already and need more training or maybe I didnt have any bad habits.
I stopped after my school time and start running back again on my first 7km run during Mcdonald run 2009.
2. How often do you run in a week?
Normally 3 times a week, and may be none too. But most of the time, I would say 2-3 times per week and clock around 7-8km per run.
3. Besides running, do you do other sports? What happened to basketball?
Yeah, I play basketball with a group of friends weekly (provided no rain ler), and we normally do full court instead of half.
All my basketball friends asked me, whether I went for secret training? How come my scoring accuracy improved tremendously???
I think the answer will be after I have seasoned myself to run 20-25km run per week, this improvement in stamina gives me a better control during the game.
(Photo courtesy of Elaine / Victor)
4. Do you believe in power gels? ;D
So far no, maybe I don't do or never do 42km. But I will just whack if the sponsor or the organizer is giving out free during the run. :-)
5. When your children grow up, will you encourage them to take up running as a hobby?
Of course I will encourage them to run, and I hope to run with them.
6. What was your most memorable running event and why?
I think our (Dutamas Runners') handicap is the most memorable run, why ah, maybe it gives me the chance to pia as there is a chance to win out by not letting fast legs like Melvin overtake me. Haha..
7. How did you know Captain KYK of Dutamas Runners?
From Facebook group of Dutamas Runners. :-)
I joined Bukit Aman runners, but they are too fast ler... normally I can't see their shadow during the run and they hardly organize breakfast event leh... (YT: Breakfast is a very important meal after running! ;D)
So I decide to scout for another group of runners and so happen I bumped into Captain KYK who was recruiting via facebook.
8. Did you quit any vices once you started running?
The answer is NO, due to I still do bad habits like sleep late, and friends will triggered me to go drinking till 2-3am maybe once a while.
I think this the reason I cannot improve my pace to a faster pace. :-(
 4th place at the Dutamas Runners' Handicap Run
9. Your dream run would be ....
My dream run would be to run faster and faster, at least to tag along with our Captain KYK or our Mr. Tomato. :-)
(YT: We are still trying to get him to sign up for his first full marathon but he's adamantly against it. So, perhaps YOU can help us convince him to make that crazy step? ;D)
Dutamas Runners : Raymond Ng
Raymond a.k.a. Tomatoman, is one of the bubbly runners you'd meet on the road who will never fail to greet you, unless of course, he's running very very hard and turning red at the same time. His day job involves being "kuli orang" (his exact words!) or in English, you'd take it to mean "someone's slave".
He recently finished as the top runner of Tom, Dick & Harry's Mou Man Tai 2.0 run held on 13th November 2011. Woohoo!
1. How long have you been running?
started 2006 after near death experience in 2005. and this can be another interview...hehehe.
2. When did you complete your first marathon? Was it painful?
first 42km was KL marathon 2007. painful, yes, caused by leg muscle cramps.
3. What was your most memorable event for 2011 and why?
can I have 2 events? :P
PJ half marathon - I did my PB :)
TMBT - 50km trail run...my first distance beyond the marathon (in running)
4. When you're not running, do you play any other sports?
cycle...used to play racket games...badminton and squash but not anymore
5. You're very into trail running. Tell us, is it scary? Does it help you be a better (and faster) runner on the road? Would you be willing to guide newbie Dutamas Runners on an easy trail one day? ;D
(sorry, I had to throw that last one in. ;D)
yes, trail running is NOT boring like road running. definitely not scary during the day but when the sun sets, it can be a little spooky. other than that, it's definitely not scary if you like nature and don't mind mud on your shoes. it does help you to be more agile as trail running is not like the the flat road where you can actually close your eyes and run, provided no dog poo along your route!
trail running involves more muscles used. your feet not only move forward, they need to have extra movements, vertically & horizontally, or up down left right. essentially it's a full workout for your ankles. strengthen ligaments, tendons and other muscles as opposed to road running.
so when shall DR go for a trail run? easy trail...ok, let's go FRIM...26th ok?
6. What is the best and worst thing(s) about running?
best - you just feel good...partly due to endorphin...a "drug" produced by our own body which has the effects similar to morphine! yes! i'm not pulling your leg here. it's true.
google it or just read this link.
like it or not, we will be addicted to it...that's when you know why there are drug addicts. well, we are the natural and original drug addicts! woohoo! :D
who doesn't want to feel good, right?
worst - injuries!!!! cos you can't feel good when you can't run.
7. Do you have any favourite carbo loading food?
nope...i just eat anything...but remember carbo loading doesn't work if you munch munch munch the day before the race or marathon. you need to EAT, don't FAST the week before the run. not necessary to eat a horse or eat as if there's no tomorrow. just eat your regular meals with a bit more carbs.
8. If you could organise an event, how and what would it be?
Our Capt KYK DR1 has the answer. A time handicap run! Yes!!!
Set a distance, eg: 5km or 10km. Be honest with your personal best timing.
Slowest (no offence!) start first and fastest start last. Mathematically, all should arrive at the finishing line at the same time, but we know that's not going to happen. And that's where the climax is. Last few hundred metres will be everyone chasing & trying to outrun each other.
(DR1 kekeke, that's a good one!)
Raymond & Michelle at the Genting Trailblazer event.
9. What advice would you give to newbie runners?
Don't fly when you've just started walking!
Oh...what I mean is, don't jump into a marathon if you have not ran 5km, 10km, 21km, 30km. Why? Marathon is 42.195km...NOT 4.2km.
Now that I've got that clear, hopefully...
Ok, running is FUN!
DON"T be intimidated by those fast legs. You must understand that they did not start running yesterday or a newbie like you. Those fast runners have been running for years...yes ...years! They have trained and seasoned their legs, body and mind to be able to run fast over a long distance.
I started in 2006 and all I wanted then, was to run 10km without stopping and walk. I didn't bother about my time then.
After that, you increase your target...maybe run 10km a little faster than your previous time. Or just maintain your pace if you don't like to be gasping like fish out of water when you run faster. then when you've done enough 10km runs, you may like to try 15km or 21km and eventually progress to a marathon. But you don't have to if you don't like the idea. There are many runners who just stick to 10km or 21km. They don't like the marathon distance...too far la.
But on the other hand, there are marathon maniacs or freaks who only run marathons. they don't do 5km or 10km runs cos to them, too short. Or they just like the idea to run far over a long time to enjoy it.
Well, you don't have to follow anyone's standard, you just run according to how your body feels. DON'T be KIASU!
You don't have to beat or outrun anybody unless of course you have a bet with your friend and a beer is on the line. hahaha!
Don't be intimidated when you see a fast running tomato on the road, just say hi to Raymond!
Dutamas Runners : Paul Dimaandal
Paul seems to know almost every runner on the road - he's CRAZY friendly! You'll be able to spot Paul from a mile away as he'll greet you with an ever ready smile and a loud chirpy hello!
(actually, I'd say it's his hysterical laughter!)
1. How long have you been running?
I've been running longer distances since 2007. During primary and secondary days, I'm also a track and field player doing sprints and hurdles.
2. Have you always enjoyed running? Seriously?
I always enjoy running. I actually love running regardless whether I meet my goals or not. Running always gives me a sense of peacefulness inside. It's the time for me to release the stress and tension I get from the everyday hustle and bustle.
3. When did you complete your first marathon and was it painful?
My first marathon was in Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2008 (SCMS). It was a torture! I got cramps just at the 15km mark because I lacked sleep the night before. Aside from that, I underestimated the marathon. :)
I walked the last 27km. :) The only thing that kept me moving was the finisher tee. :)
4. Do you think everyone (or maybe just runners) should complete at least one or two marathons in their lifetime?
Yes I think so. Running a marathon always is about conquering yourself and knowing your limits.
at the recent PJ Half Marathon.
5. What is the best and worst thing(s) about running?
Best thing in running: Running gives you the sense of peacefulness. It's also the best way to meet and socialize with other people.
Worse thing in running: It makes most of my toe nails ugly and they look awful. :D
6. When you're not running, do you play any other sports?
Yes I do. I swim, bike or play badminton.
7. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? (No, you can't say "I want to be a faster runner!")
How come it's like you've read my mind on being a faster runner? :) OK, Since you mentioned that as an exception, I'll go for being taller. LOL. I always feel having longer legs are always an advantage in most sports.
8. Do you have any favourite carbo loading food?
Hell yeah! :) I love a very good fried rice! Well, I know pastas are the best source of carbs compared to rice, but I still feel rice powers me up or gives me enough stored energy.
I actually eat anything before the race except spicy foods. I've had an experience of eating spicy food a day before the race. Race day comes and you're running faster to the toilets instead of towards the finish line! That sucked!
9. Are there any events you're looking forward to in 2012?
Nothing specific yet in mind but I want to run more in overseas if the budget permits :) I also want to know how fast I can finish a marathon in cold weather.
p.s. What's his daytime job, you ask? A design consultant.
Dutamas Runners : Seng Chor
Seng Chor is an IT Security Professional, where part of his job includes doing analysis on security requirements of critical systems, processes, products and services in order to maintain the most cost effective way to ensure information security. In his words, he is "the security guard".
1 How long have you been a regular Dutamas Runner?
One day some time in the beginning of the year (2011), Yin invited me to run with her and her mum. It was then that I was introduced to Dutamas Runner's Captain Khoo Yit Kiat. Since then, I join Dutamas Runner whenever I can. Not sure if I can be considered a regular in Dutamas Runner.
2 Have you been running for long? Do you enjoy running?
I used to run on a daily basis many donkey years ago. Somehow I stopped for no apparent reason some time in 1997, probably something else more interesting came along. I started running again in last year Rat Race after my long time friend (from school days) invited me to join the company training. Since then, I have been running regularly and joining races. I definitely enjoy running, still wondering why I stopped years ago. I enjoy meeting fun people like the Dutamas Runner's gang and of course not forgetting the food I get to enjoy after each of the running session.
At this year's Standard Chartered KL Marathon.
3 This year alone, you have completed two (2) full marathons. Congrats, by the way! I don’t think I am as brave as you are. How did you feel after each marathon?
I always wanted to run in a marathon as I believe that is the one thing (many others) I need to do before I die. I was quite surprise myself that I actually ran 2 full marathons within a month. I don't think I am as brave also, just that I have this crazy attitude, the Nike attitude ("Just Do It"). How did I feel after each marathon? Well, I felt that I have finally accomplished one of my dreams after so many years. I was just happy and felt liberated after I finished my first marathon. In my mind, just knew that another dream finally achieved.
4 Was that your happy running moment? =D
If you are referring to the 2 marathons, I must say it is not the happiest running moment. I feel that my happiest running moment was the Men's Health and Shape Run as I did not expect to get the medal due to the limited number. I was so happy at the finished line when I was given the medal.
5 Can you sum up the best and worst things about running?
Best things - Able to connect back to some of the old friends and of course knowing all the nice new friends. Ahh, not forgetting the food, wondering why all runners have the same thought. :-)
Worst things - Can't think of any, don't think I have any bad experience from running.
6 Do you have any ongoing running objectives?
I do, I have set a goal for myself to finish in 10 half marathons and 10 full marathons races within 3 years.
(YT: Impressive. But why 10 Full Marathons and 10 Half Marathons? And how many more to go?
Seng Chor: Ahh, just wanna to collect 10 FM and 10 HM medals within a certain time frame. I set the goal this year. So far, I have 2 FM and 2 HM in the bag already. Will be doing another 2 FM and 2 HM by end of the year.)
7 What is your favourite pre-race carbo loading food?
I like spaghetti, potatoes salad and.... I actually eat anything that is nice.
BHP Orange Run 2011
8 Your next running event would be ...
Salomon Trail Run and River Jungle Marathon. Yes, another full marathon coming up. I told you so, I have this crazy attitude.
In case you didn't know, Seng Chor is also an avid scuba diver!
Dutamas Runners : Melvin Lim
I’m sure you’ve seen Melvin Lim on the road and at most of the major events. When he isn’t running, he is a vocational training consultant as well as a wonderful & cute baby products supplier by day.
1. How long have you been running?
Started my 1st Field & Track run - Form 6@1993 (400m only) but no prior run at all in my life except 1-2 Malay Mail Big Walk!
Then my room mate @ UPM, Patrick Choo Yong Chek invited me to run with him around the Uni and it was really fun because UPM is surrounded by lots of greenery (those days). It was actually addictive and I ran or played squash almost every day if there was no exam looming or I was not going back home in Segambut on weekends. I was absorbed into the college's (University residence) team relay as a reserve on my 2nd year of studies and I got a 1st runner-up medal, without a single sweat. :-) My only individual podium achievement was coming in 6th for 5km field & track.
Just right before & after graduation, I raced in 2 road races, the Larian Merdeka & PJ Half (21km) but I told myself never to run such a long distance again as it was damn painful & suffering after the run (whole body ache, bruised toes). I also had a taste of running up the 60++ Floors Empire Tower (next to Plaza Yow Chuan) & KL Towerthon, all in 1999.
Thereafter, it was a total break from running for the next 11 years till I participated in a CNY 2010 Tiger Beer Run, invited by Eugene Chan June Yew. I was actually attracted by the prizes, RM8,888 cash + air ticket or something else !!! Too bad both Eugene & the "not so feeling well but still great" Captain KYK spoilt my day, or else I may have a chance to taste the $$ (if I'm not mistaken, haha perasan kan?).
[YT: *cough cough cough* Be careful, Captain!]
Seriously speaking, if I was as fit as I'm now, I was probably 1st runner up. :-) Anyway, it has been destined not to be mine but for Captain to enjoy his trip to Berlin and he was and is still a faster runner (even when he's not so fit!). Since then, I was very motivated to pick up running again, preparing for the next cash winning chances... am I dreaming???
I can't remember how I got to know about Adination (Adidas Running Community) but the next next person that I need to thank is Ronnie See for his inspiration & motivation at KLCC park every Thursday evening. He's really passionate and hardworking about his training, and till today I still can't follow but his hard trainings has made me a better runner. Then only I joined DR group upon Captain's invitation and he's another person that I'm looking at in catching up though I know the day may never come till he retires or injured. :-)
Think got to stop here, too long already right?
[YT: Hehehe. ;)]
2. You recently completed your first full marathon at the SCKLM 2011. Was it a very happy moment for you? Did you celebrate with the family?
Yes, I was damn happy and it was my dream & #1 of my life's goal since 2000 after a goal setting session. Celebration with family? Not really coz my wife not very enthusiastic with my involvement in running but to me, as long as no objections, that's good enough. :-)
Hope some DR ladies can encourage her do more physical exercise...
[YT: So who's going to babysit the kiddies while she comes out and run? ;)]
3. How long did you prepare for your full marathon?
Not enough according to the season runners. :-(
I only managed two (2) 30km runs and a max of 70km/week in the 3rd last week prior to the run. Only picked up my mileage after mid May due to hectic work commitment since beginning mid April.
Diet wise, I really planned my carbo loading properly (Tues-Fri of the SCKLM week), i.e. about 6g of complex carbohydrate/day for every kg of my weight and I think it worked coz don't think I cramped during the run (initially I thought it was cramp). It was due to low mileage & perhaps ran too fast earlier part of my race that my muscles/ligament/tendon (whatever you call it) around the knee could not take it and I felt intense pain from 25km onwards. Nevertheless, after some running, walking & limping for bout 7km and with lots of massage oils on my knees, I just persevered to finish the race from 33km onwards without much stopping.
4. What is the best and worst thing about running?
Best - Knowing new friends & being exposed to new makan places by running friends. :-)
Worst - Injuries (it kept me out for a full 3 over months after my SCKLM 10' half marathon ("HM") - I actually asked for it coz my ankle injury from squash did not heal completely even after 2 months & I went ahead with running a HM without enough mileage also)
5. What is your next running objective?
Podium in a relay & individual again (have not tasted that since my Uni years) and a sub 4 in FM!
Photo credit to Yum Kim Kok.
6. Any major events coming up before the year ends?
Nothing firm yet in my calendar as there are quite a number of events that actually clash with my weekend work, either seminars or parenthood/baby expos.
Personal important event - PAR 7 (coz this could possibly be my 1st taste of podium again after such a long dry spell!)
7. Why do you keep on running?
Get to meet new friends, try new food & improve my timing!
8. If you are not running, what other sports/exercise do you do?
Personally I do not have any other hobbies except playing sports and right now running is my one and only sports. I will go back to playing squash after PAR 7 coz my close school mates complained about abandoning them after my injury last year! I can also play badminton, table-tennis, basketball, volleyball, fencing, swimming but only so so in all these sports. Guess I have better record at running after all. :-)
Thanks for sharing with us so much about your running background. I'm sure the Captain will now have to be on his toes, in case you come catching up from behind!
See you at the Pacemakers' 7th Anniversary Run on August 14th, 2011 at the Kepong Metropolitan Park!
Dutamas Runners : Chin Ann
Chin Ann
of http://www.vinann.com recently completed the Sundown Ultra Marathon 2011 (100km) in Singapore on 25th June this year.
When I first met him, I found him shy and quiet but follow him on Twitter, and you will see his chatty side!
I thought I'd ask him a few questions so that we could get to know him a little bit better.
1. How long have you been running?
I started my running in August 2008 when I brought my 1st pair of running shoe Saucony Triumph 5. It's coming to 3 years in August.
2. Why do you run?
I started to run as I know running is the easiest way to achieve a healthy lifestyle and importantly to slim down :)
3. Since you're still running regularly, I guess that means you really enjoy it, right? Or do you consider it as something you "must" do?
Yes, I'm still enjoy running. It's have become part of my life. Saturday and Sunday morning, my mind and body will auto wake up for running!
4. What is the best and worst thing about running?
Best thing was just happened recently that I completed 100km without any muscles cramps problems! I even can sprint in the last 2km from 98th km mark!
Worst thing - cramp in the marathon race. I have few times cramp in the races and i wish i can end my race immediately and go back home rest.
5. Name a happy running moment/event and why.
The happy running event was my Virgin 42KM Marathon in Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2009. As that was my first 42KM marathon, I really follow my Sifu Terrence advice. I still can remember clearly how I achieved my sub-5 timing. With Sifu advise and encouragement during race, I remember Sifu Terrence asked me to speed up at 30KM point else, I would not able to hit sub-5. Eventually at last I managed to complete my 1st ever personal best timing which was 4 hours 57 minutes, which is now still my 42KM personal best timing. haha Since then, for the rest of my marathons timing from second until 10th, my timing was over 5 hours. I wonder how I did it back then. :)
Ultra Buddies Group Photo before the start of Sundown Ultra 100KM
6. Can you tell us how you felt while running the Sundown Ultra Marathon 100km?
Run...Run...Run... and keep running... the word was running up and down in my mind. I'm lucky I have many different companions to run with during my 1st 50KM. After 50KM, I only had 3 companions to run with. It was really a fight against body not to fall asleep. We brought Coke from petrol station to keep us awake. It feel good when you have someone to pace with. It keeps my motivation going and to keep running at 3AM.
7. Would you recommend the 100km to anyone? If yes, what would your advice be?
Go run a few 42KM marathons then only consider 100KM. Part of the quality you need to sign up 100KM is "insanity" and guts too!
(YT: Yep. I don't think I'll ever sign up for it!)
I would only advise you to join 100KM when you have a big bunch of "ultra buddies" training together and supporting each other during training. We had our most wonderful lunch ( it was just plain rice and an egg) in one of our 9 hours training.
8. What is your next running objective?
To achieve sub-5 marathon target in 2012 and to run Ultra marathons. Other than that, I'm always out to improve my condition to run injury free !
9. I forgot to ask, what do you do for a living? =D
I'm working as a Finance Executive at one of the Government Linked companies.
At the recent BHP Orange Run 2011 on 17th July 2011
10. What is your next event?
My next races are The River Jungle Marathon on Sept 25 and Putrajaya Night Marathon on 15 Oct, but these are just part of my training for my major race in November which is Malaysia 1st Ultra "The Most Beautiful Thing" : Sabah Adventure Challenge 100KM Trail Ultra Marathon.
(YT: That sounds scary yet awesome... yikes!)
All the best, Chin Ann, and keep on running!
